If You Have More Than $1,500 in Your Checking Account, Make These 5 Moves

Congratulations on amassing $1,500 or more into your account!  It feels good to accomplish this.  No more checking your balances or hoping a check doesn’t process before your pay date.

Now, it’s time to think about some mid to long term goals you’ve had for a while.  Using the SMARTER goal method, you want your goals to be specific, measurable, aligned with your values, realistic, time-bound, exciting, and recorded.  As you set your goals, decide how much you want to invest, spend, save, and give.  Here are a few ideas:

  1. Invest in stock using Etrade.com or stockpile.com.  Invest in startups through Wunderfund.  Etrade accepts whole share purchases while Stockpile allows for fractional shares to be purchased.  Wunderfund is located in Cincinnati, OH and they take all the guesswork out of investing in start-up companies with their research and reporting.  Health sciences, technology, and manufacturing companies are ones to watch.

  2. Automate your payments on your debt instruments like credit cards and mortgage payments.  You can even pay more on a smaller debt to accelerate the payoff of the debt.

  3. Earn product rewards to shop and save the environment. Melaleuca offers preferred customer online shopping accounts at its midwestern wellness store.  Customers enjoy benefits and deep savings for shopping through their preferred membership. Join a solid wellness community.

  4. Invest in a life insurance policy or burial plan to ease the financial and emotional burden of your family in the event of your passing.

  5. Decide which causes you feel strongly about and donate to them.  Social innovation organizations like Starfire, Design Impact, and the Urban League are great ways to invest in the good work happening in our city.

With these 5 moves, you will be armed with ways to use your excess funds in ways that pay off!
